Canceling a Wedding

wedding_cakeThere is no matter what's the reason for postponing or canceling your wedding, remember you shouldn’t upset. Life continues. Be sure new better chances are waiting for you in the future.
Now you should be strong and organize canceling your wedding arrangements in a right way according to established etiquette.

Inform the quests

It’s a good manner to inform your quests as soon as the decision is made. Many of them need to cancel travel arrangements or have other plans. Anyway they should know. It is also appropriate to explain concisely the reason of postponing. For example: "due to the Bride's illness" or "due to a death in the family."

If you have not yet formally announced your wedding, you can just inform your closest friends and family. Then they will be able to tell anybody who asks.

If invitation cards are not yet sent but most your friends and relatives are aware of your wedding date – you may just send them a simple printed card:
“Due to a family illness, the wedding of Ann Little to John Thomas will not take place on October 14 as originally planned. A new wedding date will be announced as soon as possible.”

If the date is already known (for postponing):
”Mr. and Mrs. Mark Thomas
announce that the wedding of their daughter
Miss Ann Little to John Thomas
which was postponed, will now take place
on January 19, 2008 at the Valentine’s Club.”

When the invitations have already been sent, you'll have to call each guest to let them know of the postponement or canceling. This may appear to be too hard emotionally or even physically to phone everybody, so your friends and family may help you make the calls.

If your decision is to cancel your wedding:
You may call your quests if there is little time before the date of wedding; or
Send brief messages, printed on small cards with text like that:
“Mr. and Mrs. Jason Jackson announce that the marriage of their daughter, June, to Mr. Michel Smith will not take place.”
